EDITOR’S PERSPECTIVE

Angela Bennett

W

hat unique and extraordinary people our intriguing city produces. In this issue alone we meet an exceptional range of Cantabrians from one who has opened a lodge to nurture women only, to a comedienne, stylists, restaurateurs and award-winning architectural designers. While many of our most talented inevitably head overseas to pursue their dreams, a good many of them return, even if just for a short time, because another thing that Christchurch does is forge strong ties. Cal Wilson is one such talented performer who is returning to the city to perform in the Christchurch Arts Festival. Her ability to think quickly on her feet and her skill in describing everyday occurrences in a quirky new way has made this comedienne one we all love to laugh with (page 8). It will also be a homecoming for former Canterbury Opera singer Angus Wood and Christchurch born Jared Holt when they perform in Puccini’s emotionally charged Madama Butterfly – the first production in Christchurch since the earthquakes for New Zealand Opera (page 10). In our fashion section you will have the opportunity to see the depth of skill from our local in-store stylists, models, hair stylists and makeup artists with Metropol’s Stylists’ Challenge – a fashion photo shoot that took place in the elegant and atmospheric Heritage Hotel (page 28-31). Our famous restaurateurs are not missed out – catch up with news on the hospitality scene in the city in our cuisine section, including news of Tony Astle’s plans for on The Terrace. And finally, while Christchurch may have lost many beautiful homes and buildings, there is reason to celebrate as we witness many new and innovative ones now gracing our skyscape with their inspiring lines. This year’s ADNZ Architectural Design Awards for Canterbury and Westland were recently announced with nine regional awards being given to six winning local designers. Meet some of our city’s finest designers and enjoy a browse of their inspirational work (pages 54-57).

Cantab' opens lodge for women A lodge for women who need time out is about to open south of Auckland.

A

rarimu Lodge is the result of one woman's dream to offer a place of peace and tranquility for women who need an escape from life's stressors and pressures. Jane Henderson, an Aucklander originally from Christchurch, wanted to create a residential lodge just for women who need a break to address their issues with alcohol or other drugs or the byproducts of stress such as anxiety and depression. 'I felt a need to give women an experience like mine,' says Jane, who five years ago spent three weeks at a residential programme and quit drinking

The stressors can be overwhelming, she says, and sometimes women 'just need somewhere to find a bit of peace'. Her services on offer at the lodge will include one-to-one counselling and group therapy with an experienced clinician. Other activities for residents will include walking in the native bush, horse riding, therapeutic massage and other specialist services if requested. Jane, who has a medical background,

espite Australia trying to claim her, comedienne Cal Wilson is a Kiwi, and not only that but a born and bred Cantabrian. She attended high school and University here and went on to co-found the Court Jesters improv group in 1990. She was part of the NZ team that won the World Theatresports title in Los Angeles in 1994. She received the inaugural ‘Billy T Award’, NZ’s most prestigious comedy award recognising comedians with outstanding potential in 1997 and was judged Best Comedian 2000 by Metro magazine. Cal has ricocheted between NZ and Australia over the years honing her skills in stand-up, radio and TV where she was a regular panellist on TV3’s ‘7 Days’. She’s also taken her skill to Montreal’s Just for Laughs Festival and had a successful season of her one woman show ‘Jekyll and Bride’ at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. Cal returns to Christchurch for the Christchurch Arts Festival. She will be performing her show ‘It Could Have Been Me’ on 10 and 11 September…

At what stage in life did your skill and desire for improv, comedy and live performance begin to show? I always loved making people laugh, but it really kicked in at high school. Burnside High had such a great Drama department, and such encouraging teachers, and it was doing Theatresports at school that really set me on the comedy path. How did it feel then to make people laugh and is this still what drives you? I was really shy, and making people laugh was a great alternative to having to make proper conversation. Making people laugh onstage feels amazing – like when you crack a great joke at a party, but magnified 100 times. What inspired you to follow this path as a career? I just really loved performing. I didn’t really have a plan, but work gets you work, and I just kept going. I always thought I’d like to be an actor, and finally, playing characters in this show, I get to be! What does it take to make a great comedian? The ability to describe ordinary things in a new way, and the desire to do that in front of heaps of strangers.

It’s like going on a blind date with hundreds of people at once. You were immersed in improv in your early days - how does it feel when you step on stage in front of a new audience? It’s exciting. It’s like going on a blind date with hundreds of people at once. Sometimes you hit it off instantly, other times it’s a slow burn, sometimes you all want it to be over as soon as possible. Live performance, TV, radio… you are quite an all-round media talent – what’s your favourite skill? Being able to think on my feet, it comes in handy for everything. Have you ever been stumped on stage, and if so how do you recover? We were performing in an old Elephant house at a zoo, and all the power went out. We got people to hold up their phones, and we shouted all our jokes, until the power came back. What is the best thing about stand-up comedy? Being in a room full of people who are all joined together by one thing What is the most challenging thing during a live performance? Really drunk people can be tricky, because they can throw your timing off. Or they can throw up over the row in front of them. I have experienced both these things. Where do you get inspiration from for your shows? The things that happen in life. Life throws stuff at you, that you wouldn’t accept as plausible, if it was in a novel. You may as well use it as material!

Tell us about your new show for the Christchurch Arts Festival – ‘It Could Have Been Me’… It’s a show about all the people I could have been if I’d made different decisions. I said that to an elderly lady at the Edinburgh Fringe Festival, and she said “Oh. Was one of THEM a success?” What do you do before a show? I pace about and mutter under my breath. And after? I loll about with wine. On a more personal note what is your favourite drink? Wine. Especially if Pegasus Bay made it. What is one thing Metropol readers would be surprised to know about you? I only learnt to swim last year. What were you doing the last time the thought went through your head, “I shouldn’t be doing this”? Learning to swim. If you could go back and tell your teenage self something what would it be? Get swimming lessons now. Otherwise you’ll be learning in your early forties, in a class right next to your five year old son’s. What is one book you would recommend everyone read? Only one? OK, Good Omens by Terry Pratchett and Neil Gaiman. If everyone else reads it, I’ll be able to stop lending out my copy. What’s next on the wish list? A show with less props. I had to bring a whole extra suitcase. Next year – just chatting. Tickets: www.artsfestival.co.nz

In what is a homecoming in many ways, opera singers from all over the world are returning to Christchurch to perform in an emotionally charged production of Puccini's Madama Butterfly.

I

t will also be a homecoming for New Zealand Opera, which will celebrate its Christchurch connection with its first production since the earthquakes in the beautifully refurbished Isaac Theatre Royal with a five-night season, beginning on Thursday, July 23. “This is a special event for New Zealand Opera and the level of artists is as high as anything we've ever had in Christchurch – it's a fine cast,” says David Kelly, the production's répétiteur, who is the vocal coach and accompanying pianist during rehearsals. Madama Butterfly has brought home from Germany former Canterbury Opera singer Angus Wood, in the role of the cad Pinkerton, and Christchurch-born Jared

Holt as Sharpless. New Zealand mezzo Kristin Darragh is also back from Germany, while Wellingtonraised James Rodgers has returned from New York. Dunedin-raised Robert Tucker and Dunedin-born Martin Snell, who are now both based in Switzerland, are here for their respective roles of Prince Yamadori and Butterfly's fearsome uncle, The Bonze. The Christchurch Freemasons New Zealand Opera Chorus is at full strength, with 32 singers creating the silken sea of sound that is so hauntingly familiar in the Humming Chorus. New Zealand Opera's emerging artists Jarvis Dams, Chelsea Dolman, Emily Scott and Christian Thurston will share roles and

also contribute to the chorus. Many chorus members have come from Dunedin and other parts of the South Island, volunteering to sing in the opera. “They're coming just for the experience. This will be the largest chorus we've ever had for an opera in Christchurch. It will fill the theatre with sound,” says David, who is also a Christchurch man specially returning for this production. The title role will be played by acclaimed French soprano Anne Sophie Duprels, who has performed in magnificent opera houses all around the world. Before arriving in Christchurch from Paris, Duprels was shown photographs of the inside of the Isaac Theatre Royal. She was impressed by its beauty and said she was

really looking forward to coming here. The soprano has already received high praise in international reviews for her virtuosic performances as Butterfly. “Duprels throws her body and soul into her music,” declared England's Daily Telegraph last year, while The Times critic wrote, “Duprels' singing blazes with more and more passion as the evening progresses.” This elaborately produced version of Madama Butterfly will be the same as the sell-out show performed in Wellington and Auckland in 2013, although the cast will be completely new. Conductor Francesco Pasqualetti is a world-renowned Puccini expert who returns after delighting audiences last year with the NZ Opera Christchurch season of La bohème.

When the charming Professor Marcus turns up on Mrs Wilberforce’s doorstep, she couldn’t be happier. It's even better when his friends arrive to rehearse for their amateur string quintet. IN THE CITY WHAT’S ON BARS & CAFES WHAT’S NEW ART RETAIL DOWNTOWN

Duncan Cotterill Plaza is sympathetic to the adjacent Knox Church

Passed first BASE Duncan Cotterill Plaza is the first building in the city to achieve a rating under BASE (Building a Sustainable Environment) – the sustainability tool developed specially for the rebuild.

T

he four-storey, mixed-use development, at 148 Victoria St, was designed by +MAP Architects and is owned by John Ryder. Offices and retail space are complemented by a courtyard and memorial sculpture. The development opened last month. BASE is a simple, introductory-level green building assessment for the Christchurch rebuild, developed by the New Zealand Green Building Council (NZGBC) in conjunction with Christchurch City Council. It was launched in 2012 as a way to foster a healthy, efficient rebuilt city with reduced environmental impact – in line

18 July 16, 2015 Metropol

with the vision that emerged from the 'Share an Idea' public consultation project. BASE is particularly suited to small and medium commercial buildings, including mixed-use developments. NZGBC chief executive Alex Cutler says certifying the first BASE rating is a positive landmark in the rebuild, and a signal that meeting green building standards is affordable and achievable for developers. “BASE was developed to achieve buildings that are 20% more efficient than Building Code in terms of energy and water use, with a healthier indoor environment. This makes them more

attractive to tenants and means they will hold their value over the long term,” says Ms Cutler. Ryder says he wanted to give something back to the city, and Duncan Cotterill Plaza was an exciting chance to build something innovative and distinctive. “We're thrilled to have created a building that has a lighter environmental footprint and is more efficient and attractive for tenants,” says Ryder. “It's also sensitive to the needs of the city. Duncan Cotterill Plaza is set back from the road, so its position and scale are sympathetic to the adjacent Knox Church, an important heritage icon.”

IN THE CITY

Kitchen equipment emporium Mid-winter calls for unctuous slow cooked comfort food and the secret to creating the most flavoursome dish is - cook it in cast iron! Yes, those hefty enamelled, much-loved casseroles that our mums and grandmas used for their stews, barley broths and braised joints, are back in fashion.

“C

ast iron is a winner at the moment,” says Sandra McLay of tfe, that popular kitchen and chefs' equipment emporium on Moorhouse Ave. “It is so versatile," she says. “Cast iron dishes conduct heat beautifully, can go straight from stovetop (even induction) to oven, and last for decades; and if there's a power cut you can use them on your log fire.” Tfe stocks several brands of cast iron, from top of the line Staub to more affordable La Cuisine which is designed in Ireland, Masterclass, designed in England, and the famous US brand, Lodge. The lidded dishes come in a range of colours, shapes and sizes – from round and oval to deep and shallow, small to enormous, and there is even a paella dish. For fast cooking as opposed to slow, but just as good at producing winter warmers, is the good old pressure cooker. But say farewell to those cumbersome beasts of our childhood. These days pressure cookers are classy stainless steel Italian affairs that can even be used on induction stove tops. They come in two sizes, 5 litre or 7.5 litre. Perfect for busy people.

PS: On the paleo diet? Buy a spiral cutter and instantly turn your vegetables into noodles. Lots of brands and styles to choose from. Fun for kids too.

“S

pring/summer trends bring a rich diversity of styles, new shapes, and pop of colour to meet the expectations and demands of the fashionable crowd,” says Liz McNicholl, swimwear buyer from Ballantynes. High-neck crop tops and high-neck one-piece swimsuits create beautiful clean lines and individual style, with Seafolly's new look Goddess range including very on trend keyhole necklines. There are sporty looks with functional front zips and texture, and the emergence of a strong bold trend with block colours and minimalistic pieces for maximum impact. For colours look for deep indigo or black, bound in fresh white, and bright nectarine.

A favourite in store is the very stylish and flattering high-neck one-piece from Seafolly's Coast To Coast range, with its sporty engineered textured stripes created from European eyelet knit fabric in classic black and white. Beyond the beach, Seafolly has a great selection of resort wear, with cotton gauze kaftans, jumpsuits, flattering easy

wear pants, maxi dresses, and stunning summer dresses. Tigerlily continues to find individual inspiration for each range it creates, with Kazakhstan in Central Asia the feel behind their Kazak range. Think opulent borders emulating fine embroidery, geometric patterns on rich indigo, and retro inspired '50s halter with moulded cups, side support with powermesh/boning and soft neck and back ties. Ballantynes also stock Sunseeker, Jantzen and Togs - all from sundrenched Australia. Sunseeker's range is built around cup sizes, so as to offer the best fit for every woman, and also uses features such as ruching and twist bandeaus to make sure all body shapes look great in their designs.

Olive trees have survived thousands of years due to their powerful defence system of bitter-tasting compounds in their leaves, ghting disease, bacteria and decay.

ANCIENT TREES: secret to longevity

T

he oldest olive trees with continuous historical records are growing in the Garden of Gethsemane near Jerusalem, and are almost 2000 years old, although there are trees in parts of Greece said to be more than 3000 years old. During this time, and still today, the olive branch was used as a sign of peace and goodwill but the fruit and leaves were used for food and health. The bene ts of olive oil in the classic Mediterranean Diet are well documented. However, olive leaf extract made from freshpicked leaves can have more than 30 times the healing antioxidant polyphenols present in extra virgin olive oils. Laboratory research on the health bene ts of fresh olive leaves has concentrated mainly on the polyphenol oleuropein. It shows that fresh leaf extract has a 400 percent greater

antioxidant capacity than vitamin C, and about double the power of green tea or grapeseed extracts. This means it is a powerful non-toxic immune support, mainly working for you by supporting strong immune defences against pathogens in your system. This is important when you are run down, and the reason most people regain energy when taking it. It also has the advantage of not harming good gut bacteria a major advantage as about 70 percent of your immunity resides in your gut, with good bacteria playing a key role. At this time of the year with winter's ills and chills rampant, having olive leaf extract in your bloodstream can give your immune system the boost it needs to help you keep on top of winter threats. SUN-KISSED BEAUTY “If someone had said to me five years ago that I would be involved in the spray tanning industry I would have told them they were quite mad.” Matt Docherty of Sun Kissed Tan (SKT) Tanning Salons laughs at the sheer unpredictability of life.

o how did a man who sold electrical goods become a real entrepreneur in spray tanning, owning salons in Christchurch, Auckland and on the Gold Coast and with plans to open salons in the United States? “It was a combination of sheer accident and of serendipity. My wife Diana used to spray tan from home and was convinced we could make a business from it. A tiny shop with a very small rent became available in Ilam and we took the plunge. From 10 -15 tans a week to begin, we then just grew and grew. Currently in our two Christchurch salons we provide over 600 tans a week. That means 14 tans every hour we are open.” Matt and Diana certainly tapped into a gap in the market. Once reserved only for special occasions, SKT salons have changed the face of tanning offering high quality spray tanning at fantastic prises. “Right now we're into school formal season and are fully booked with 15 – 18 year olds who want that “sun kissed” look to show off their beautiful dresses to best effect. Our prices make spray tanning really accessible to these young women.” Matt adds that SKT are the official provider of spray tanning to Dancing with the Stars “which cements our claim

T

he first hospice shop opened in Merivale in 2008 and there are now seven across the city; in Merivale, Avonhead, Sumner, The Palms, Beckenham, Bishopdale and Kaiapoi, all run by a combination of staff and volunteers and open seven days a week. “Our hospice shops are very much part of the community,” says Sue, “and everyone who donates to, or buys from, us is directly supporting the Nurse Maude Hospice.” Right now the hospice shops are in dire need of good quality winter clothing, particularly women's tops and jackets and larger sized women's clothing. “We are struggling to keep up with the demand for these in all our shops,” says Sue. “So whether you're cleaning out your wardrobe or just have one jersey, jacket or warm top that you no longer wear, we'd be delighted to see you.” Clothing can be dropped off at any of the hospice shops. Sue says the ongoing support of the Nurse Maude Hospice relies heavily on the generosity of the people of Canterbury.

Medical Research trains enquiring minds It's easy to understand why some may have questioned the need for a medical research foundation back in 1961 when Professor Don Beaven and a group of committed Rotarians formed the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation.

A

fter all, isn't Christchurch too small to be running worldleading medical research? Isn't New Zealand too small to expect to lead the world in such huge global health problems as cancer, heart disease and neurological conditions? “The answer”, says Kate Russell, CEO of CMRF, “is a resounding 'no'. Prof Beaven's reasoning for starting CMRF is as true today as it was in 1961”. “If we want to draw the best medical doctors to our hospitals, then we must provide research opportunities for them to extend their knowledge and to develop enquiring minds that when

For that reason and to encourage and enable young researchers to further their careers in medical science, the Canterbury Medical Research Foundation gives more than a million dollars each

KIDSZONE

PUTTING YOU IN THE PICTURE

M

others are notoriously absent from family snapshots, and for a good reason… they're often the ones holding the camera. As they painstakingly record their children's growth and development, parents can forget their children also want pictures and memories of their mother and father. Too often, the feeling of being self-conscious or unimportant crowds parents out of family photographs. With that in mind, I was lured out of the house on a chilly autumnal morning. I was not going to be the one behind the camera, but rather in the frame with my girls, and my photographer, Juliette Capaldi, promised me that it would be worth it. When we arrived, she was already there;

a small, cheerful woman bobbing about in rust coloured leaves that litter Hagley Park. “Isn't it great,” she said. And once my nerves and self-consciousness faded, I could see that indeed it was. The light streamed down between the branches of the oak trees and my daughters danced and laughed. Juliette had given us careful instructions on what to bring, and her expert eye and the magical autumn light took care of the rest. At the end of the session, it was hard to persuade the children to leave. Now, the picture of the three of us hangs on our wall and it is rare for us to leave the house without one child or the other highlighting its importance to them. They point at our portrait and say, “That's you, mummy!”

Favourites: Fudge & Fashion

craft They hand r in each flavou es. small batch When you walk into Hanmer's Decadent Fudge Company, it's often an inner battle of what to head for rst - the glorious fudge or the fashion and giftware.

W

hatever wins, walking out with something from each section is inevitable. Mick and Sue O'Callaghan brought their fudge company down to Hanmer when they moved here from Nelson 18 months ago, so they could live closer to family in Christchurch. When Mick started the business he was selling fudge at the weekly Nelson Market. Sue was busy with her fashion accessory import business. The O'Callaghan's joined entrepreneurial forces and opened Flavours of New Zealand in December 2013, initially stocking their fudge, chocolates, confectionery and gourmet food lines.

As time went on, I couldn't help myself, and introduced a small fashion section and the rest is history, says Sue. At the beginning of this year, they extended the shop, knocking out some internal walls - opening the shop up to what it is now. Our fudge is still as popular as ever but now we are becoming well known for our range of a ordable handbags, scarves and giftware. And, the fudge is simply delicious. The O'Callaghans have developed their own fudge recipe which isn't as sweet as most other fudges, and they handcraft each avour in small batches so it is as fresh as it can be. We don't mass produce. Most other fudges sold in New Zealand are

made from an imported powdered mix. People can taste the di erence straight away after tasting ours. People from all over New Zealand are arriving in Hanmer with two things on their agenda - visit the hot pools and sample and take home some Decadent Fudge. An exciting new development is their range of sugar, dairy, gluten and soy free fudges. These are proving very popular, especially with those wanting to be sugar free. They ship anywhere in New Zealand and next time you're in store bring The Decadent Fudge Company ad on this page to receive 10% o your purchase, and pick up a loyalty card.

hristchurch Orthodontics was one of the first practices in New Zealand to introduce Suresmile® some 18 months ago. This technology allows the orthodontist to use 3D technology to create customised roboticpre-bent orthodontic wires meaning more accurate treatment results in a shorter time. The ability to take full mouth intraoral scans reduces the need for impressions, and allows the orthodontist to work in partnership with the likes of Suresmile® and Invisalign (a clear aligner alternative to braces) to offer technologically advanced orthodontic treatment options. All new patients go away with custom created booklets which include photos, x-rays and detailed information of the various orthodontic options available to them. The team are very excited to now have Dr Christine (Chrissy) Bailey working alongside Dr Russell Lovatt. This allows them to offer a full Monday-Friday service at their Christchurch practice,

They've lived in North Canterbury for 20 years, and saw it as the perfect opportunity to open a local business. There was certainly a market for it and the lifestyle in the area was changing from a small, quiet town north of Christchurch, to a busy hub as the

population grew after the quakes. Deb says while business is going “extremely well” it's time to gain their presence back in Christchurch - which is just the news Coffee Worx fans have been waiting to hear. She says “We have to think differently now, and think strategically in the Christchurch market… It's all about how to make and take opportunities.” They've set up an alliance, and will be

CAN'T BEAT A BAGEL "We love bagels…and pizza. Always have. “And, as them wise folk say, do what you love and you'll never work a day in your life. So, Wholly Bagels and Pizza was born, which meant we could spend every day to enjoy making them, baking them, spreading them, filling them, eating them and of course preparing them for bagel lovers like yourself!"

S

ince its arrival in Christchurch, Wholly Bagels has been embraced with a passion. Mostly of course for the amazing, tantalising flavours of the freshly baked products, but it goes deeper - containing next to no fat or sugar, bagels are a source of vitamin C, calcium, iron, protein and fibre. While the bagel is not as saintly as an apple on the nutritional scale, it certainly sits higher up it than a burger, curry or deep fry. Since 1998, Wholly Bagels and Pizza has developed a staggering range of bagel and filling combinations for every taste and occasion – breakfast bagels, classic bagels, gourmet bagels, mini bagels, veggie bagels and naked bagels. Baked fresh daily with local ingredients means there is no need for nasty preservatives. The team truly believe

there is nothing better than a warm bagel from the oven and an espresso to start the day. At Wholly Bagels and Pizza, they are resolute in their belief that there is nothing better than a bagel, but they will concede there is a close second – a New York style pizza. Size is everything to New Yorkers, so the New York style pizza only comes in large (14 inch, still bigger than most pizza places) and jumbo (20 inch or half a metre or 'massive as' in Kiwi speak). TONY ASTLE: Perfectionist “The goal is to be the best. There is no second-best,” says one of Christchurch's leading restaurateurs, Tony Astle, who is now demonstrating at his four Victoria Street venues that he is a perfectionist in every aspect of hospitality.

“T

he whole enterprise is created by getting four things in line – food, drink, environment and service, and this also includes concept and design,” he says. “My goal is to be the best. I have a gut feeling in choosing the type of food that's to be served at my restaurants, which involves deciding on a menu that, so far, hasn't been offered and is as good as it could be.” This philosophy is immediately evident in the food, drinks and environment of all of Tony's Victoria Street restaurants and bars – the King of Snake, which has a South-East Asian menu; Mexicano's, with a Day of the Dead décor and adjoining Mexican-Spanish lounge bar, The Dirty Land; and Chinwag, with authentic Thai cuisine. Also very important to Tony is providing a setting for people to have fun. “There has to be vitality in the environment, no matter what market or age group we're aiming at. There has to be the fun factor,” he says. Hence, the distinctive bars, with their contemporary cocktails, at his

Restaurateur Tony Astle restaurants. And it is no coincidence that the King of Snake was named after a spicy cocktail that was first served in 2003 at Tony's award-winning Indochine restaurant in Cambridge Terrace. Lively chatter and high spirits in a gothic-décor setting greet you in The Dirty Land, which evolved as a bar to complement Mexicano's, and which is entered by a separate doorway. In the bar at the Chinwag Thai, just opposite Mexicano's, there is again an enticing list of cocktails, including 'One Night in Bangkok'. However, Tony, who started off as a chef, stresses that it's the food that's most important at all his restaurants. “People come here to eat. It's primarily

about food in all the establishments,” he says. A snack is also available in the bar environment. “At the King of Snake, we try to be as authentic as possible,” says Tony. The menu includes several selections from Tony's former Indochine and Chinwag Eathai venues, as well as tempting dishes ranging from steamed Marlborough tua tua to Sichuan fried tofu with spicy coriander salad and red dragon sauce. At Mexicano's, the restaurant's name gives you a good idea of what to expect on the menu. From braised beef quesadillas to black bean burritos, there is something to satisfy everyone's needs, and the meals can be modified to suit your taste.

MIDDLE EAST

I was standing in the kitchen contemplating our daily specials, in particular the fish of the day, and which starch should accompany it. I decided on couscous, and realised that I had never seen a sweet version of it. I discussed this with our pastry chef Susannah van Slooten and we said “why not?”. A couscous dessert was in the making! Originating from the Middle East, couscous also brought to mind rose water, Turkish Delight, dates and pistachios. I wanted to capture some of the bright colours of the medinas and raspberry seemed to complement the rose flavour and provide a great colour to the dish. To keep the bright green of the pistachios, every nut that went into the ice cream needed to be peeled. This is what Susannah came up with; Raspberry and Rose Couscous with Turkish Delight, Date Puree served with Pistachio Ice Cream. Complement this dessert with a delicious Lone Goat Late Harvest Riesling.

King of Snake restaurant

Artwork at Mexicano's Chinwag is home of authentic fresh Thai cuisine. The menu ranges from open-grill street food to the elegance of Thailand's oldest traditions. Now, Tony has announced that he will be adding three hospitality-focused venues on The Terrace to his fun-andfood places. The conjoined ground-floor spaces will be part of developer Antony Gough's $150 million central-city development. Tony's frontages will be onto an alley, a walkway and Oxford Terrace with a river view. He will not say yet exactly what form these venues will take. “They're not all restaurants. They will be hospitality environments, all quite individual and unique. They'll be aimed at different demographics. There's no point in aiming at the same people in all three places,” he says. “You'll be able to go there, have some fun, food and a drink. The Terrace is the best location for hospitality in Christchurch and it will be good to be part of that.” Metropol July 16, 2015 49

Gai Hem Ma Parn for example consists of crispy chicken in a rich sweet sauce with pineapple and cashew nuts and a touch of spices and that is very popular, along with a range of meat, poultry, seafood and vegetarian options.

Want it hot? Try Pad Kaprao – a traditional dish – finely chopped beef mixed with Thai holy basil and fresh chillies, served spicy hot; also available with chicken or pork. All dishes are served with Thai jasmine rice and flexibility is a part of the presentation. Want it hot or just mild – just let them know and it will be served just as you like it. “We have six Thai cooks and if you have a special request, we can cook it. Just ask about our special dishes,” says co owner Francis Parker. “All ingredients are fresh and all our sauces are prepared on site.”

Keo Thai is now open for lunches from Wednesday to Sunday, 12pm to 3pm with an extensive lunch menu. There are also two function rooms seating 18 and 28. Fully licensed, the wine selection is provided by Cellarworks Wines and chosen specifically to complement the variety of flavours found in Thai cuisine. After seven busy years, Keo Thai is expanding next door into what was formerly the Great China restaurant, which will provide extra dining space and also be used to serve coffees and desserts. Meanwhile, existing tables are in high demand, so bookings are essential especially at the weekend.

The award winners are Nic Curragh of Objects Limited, Craig South of Cymon Allfrey Architects Limited, Robert Weir of Weirwalker Architecture, Mitchell Coll of Coll Architecture, Sue Jackson of Jackson + Jackson Architectural Design and Cymon Allfrey of Cymon Allfrey Architects Limited. In addition to the nine regional awards, Highly Commendeds were awarded to Cymon Allfrey of Cymon Allfrey Architects Limited, Jason Higham of Higham Architecture, Robert Weir of Weirwalker Architecture, Kelly Rush of Krush Architecture and Darren O'Neil of O'Neil Architecture and Commendeds went to Robert Weir of Weirwalker Architecture and Mitchell Coll of Coll Architecture. Architectural Designers New Zealand CEO, Astrid Andersen, said that it is fantastic to have so many deserving winners from the Canterbury/Westland region, and that it is particularly exciting to have a few new faces to the winner's circle, like up and coming designer Mitchell Coll. “Canterbury is a fascinating region for designers to have the pleasure of working in. It is exciting, innovative, emerging, transitional and quite complex. To see young designers thriving in this region proves what a fantastic training ground Canterbury is for those looking to make their mark in this competitive industry. For this reason, we are delighted to be holding our annual conference in Christchurch, including the National awards ceremony, which will be held at the extraordinary and aptly nicknamed 'Cardboard Cathedral'.” The winners of regional awards, which are currently being awarded across the country, are now eligible for national titles including the Supreme Architectural Design Award. The national awards will be announced on 30 October 2015.

“How

ow beautiful is this?” asks artist Kirsty Nixon while bush-whacking with her family one day. It's this beauty that surrounds us every day that inspires her to capture elements of the landscape in her art. Each piece acts as a window through which we can escape. The Paradise Found collection, currently on exhibition at the Little River Gallery, is a call to action, to stop every now and again to lift our heads and remember just how lucky we are. Her exhibition is on until August 6 at this renowned gallery - a favourite destination experience at Little River on the way to Akaroa. With its sophisticated rural architecture, its divine cafe and a varied, interesting and eclectic collection of art and gifts, the gallery is a natural show space for Nixon's Paradise collection. F

irst and foremost, it's important to give a considerable amount of thought to the placement of your outdoor lights. Just as you would not place several lighting fixtures like table lamps or wall sconces in a single area of your living room, you don't want to place exterior fixtures too close together either. This is a common problem when integrating path lights into your outdoor lighting solution. Too many path lights, too close together can make your walkway look more like the runway at an

AN ARCHITECTURAL JOURNEY The Canterbury earthquakes resulted in the region losing much of its best architecture, including a large number of private homes.

L

ike many Christchurch architects and architectural designers, Cymon Allfrey has experienced the loss of some of his work as a result of the earthquakes. "It was really difficult seeing my work come down. When you put so much into a project, and then you see it disappear, it leaves you Cymon Allfrey feeling quite sad. Of course, it's much worse for our clients, the owners - we can only imagine how they must have felt.” One of the projects Cymon lost was 'Shaw House' - a project he invested a lot of his own time into. “The clients were amazing people to work with. With a relatively open brief, we were able to create a home with incredible panoramic views.”

Shaw House, like many other homes on the Port Hills, didn't survive the quakes. One of Cymon's projects that did survive the quakes is 'Wilton Close - a multi-ownership complex made up of 40 apartments. This was the largest project he had ever worked on at the time, and he found it challenging both technically and creatively. "It was difficult because we wanted to produce apartments that stood out from the crowd in terms of entry-level apartments in Central Christchurch." Cymon says the result was particularly

successful because of the way the team embraced the idea of communal living to create a sense of community within the site. Cymon often reflects on his architectural journey so far. It's been a long one that started in his grandfather's workshop when he was just a boy. He was inspired by his grandfather who was a draughtsman for the Ministry of Works and the Christchurch City Council. “He was a very precise man, and quite

Wilton Close. technical in the way he thought. He provided me with an introduction to architecture and really sparked my interest. When he passed away when I was 12, I had already decided what I wanted to do. I ended up inheriting his pencils - and the rest is history.” Cymon initially studied at the University of Canterbury, with the intention of going on to study at the School of Architecture in Wellington. However, after some soul searching, he decided to study towards a Certificate of Architectural Draughting at Christchurch Polytechnic instead. "I got my first job as a junior technician on the day of enrolment. After a couple of calls in the morning, I had a job trial that afternoon. I ended up working in that job for six years throughout my studies before heading off overseas," says Cymon. After some time in London managing retail store re-fit and relocation projects, the opportunity arose to come home.

"I phoned my previous employer, and they said they'd love to have me back. But I had one condition - I wanted to buy into the business.” Upon his return to Christchurch, the business rebranded to Stanley-Joblin+Allfrey, and Cymon stayed there for ten years. During this time, he became a registered architect after completing his professional papers at Victoria University in 2009. In 2010, Cymon decided to step away from Stanley-Joblin+Allfrey to focus on a new practice with a new direction. So Cymon bought out the line-share of the business assets and hired the existing staff, to establish Cymon Allfrey Architects. “It's been an amazing ride - a fantastic journey of very detailed learning. I have learnt a lot not only in my field, but about people as well. I've built some really great relationships." [Abridged - to read the full story go to www.defign.co.nz.]

AUTO PLUS AUTO NEWS ROAD TESTS NEW MODELS AUTO EVENTS

Disco’ Sport: Serious competition By Damien O’Carroll

What’s the difference between a Land Rover and a Range Rover? That is a question that used to be remarkably simple to answer – a Range Rover is a luxurious, big SUV that is remarkably capable off the road, while a Land Rover is a tried and tested design that is utterly incredible off the road but a bit rough on it, except for the Discovery which was a bit better on road.

68 July 16, 2015 Metropol

T

hen they went and made the Land Rover Freelander which was massively good on the road and capable, but not all-conquering off it and changed all that. Then they went and made the Discovery even better again. Then again, and even more luxurious as well. Now JLR has completely stuffed the previously easy distinction between LR and RR by introducing the Freelander-replacing Discovery Sport that is even better on the

road and surprisingly capable off it. But all of this is simply part of LR’s plans to split itself into three “brand pillars”, with the Discovery family sitting as a middle point between the Defender (and whatever replaces it) and the fullfat Range Rovers. Confused? It doesn’t really matter, because all you really need to know is that the Discovery Sport is a very good thing indeed.

70 July 16, 2015 Metropol

There's something special about top-end sports coupés, taut and muscular with the signature curvaceous rear end. Problem is, a coupé doesn't always suitably accommodate the modern active lifestyle. We all love space for the weekend trips plus enough room to accommodate the bikes, skis and the kids… all without the sacrifice of style and functionality for our urban adventuring.

AUTO PLUS

FORM &

FUNCTION: the new Mercedes Shooting Brake

E

nter the Mercedes Benz CLA Shooting Brake: an estate with the achingly-beautiful linage of a sports coupe. It's a true win-win for design conscious professionals who don't run with the SUV herd. Interestingly, the 'Shooting Brake' concept originated at turn-of–the-century hunting parties. A powered wagon for the rifles provided a welcome break from the tedious horse drawn cart. Today, the Shooting Brake represents all that was so conventional about the original idea with aggressive

styling cues and startling performance a nod to that slightly rambunctious heritage. Armstrong Prestige Christchurch is proud to present this stunning new addition to the Mercedes-Benz range, starting from just $67,400 the CLA200 Shooting Brake enters the lineup closely followed by the CLA250 and then the chart topping CLA45 AMG. The latter two of which boast the famous 4MATIC AllWheel Drive System. If you want to spice it up a little, there are plenty of optional

packages to cover every want and need. Mercedes-Benz Sales Manager Jarrod Buchanan says, “My personal favourite is the OrangeArt Edition which highlights subtle detail through the use of colour, a must see.” As the Mercedes Benz New Zealand Dealer of the Year, Armstrong Prestige Christchurch naturally has the range on display. Call in for the coupé-inspired looks, stay for the estate practicality the CLA Shooting Brake is a perfect combination of form and function.

By Damien O'Carroll

UTTERLY ADDICTIVE The Ford Fiesta ST is simply one of our favourite cars ever. Its happy puppy-like enthusiasm is infectious and its ability to simply rip corners to shreds is utterly addictive.

V

ery little has changed since we last tested the ST, in fact, nothing has changed. But that doesn't matter, because nothing really needed changing. So why are we testing it again? Because Ford offered it to us and we weren't about to turn down a chance to spend more time with a car we unashamedly love! Anyway, the fact still remains that, at $34,990, there is very little that can get close to the littlest performance Ford in terms of sheer bang for your buck. At this price point, there is nothing that could keep up with it on a winding back road either.

72 July 16, 2015 Metropol

With 134kW available from the revvy little EcoBoost engine, the ST is certainly not short of grunt. And neither is it short of enthusiasm – the wonderfully eager handling is still as cheerfully puppy-like and wonderfully accurate as ever, with razor sharp turn in and a fantastically adjustable tail end that can stay resolutely planted or wag like the aforementioned puppy, depending on your approach and mood at the time. So it's still massive fun, but what about the downsides? Last time we drove it we found the Recaro seats to be brilliantly supportive,

but made for midgets, and this hasn't changed. While they look great, the seats are almost uncomfortably small, particularly for someone of a more generous build. And while I admit to liking the occasional pie, I am not exactly massive, but I still found the seats too small… The other downside was the firm, uncompromising ride around town. This does make the Fiesta ST less than ideal as a daily driver, but the trade off in fantastic handling and massive fun is more than acceptable. For more information go to www.oversteer.co.nz

Practical & Startlingly Sexy

Now, I must admit that I am something of a fan of the BMW 4 Series Gran Coupe, packing BMW's mighty 225kW/400Nm 3.0-litre turbo inline six, the 435i GC is, of course, a fantastic performer. With a 0 to 100km/h time of just 5.2 seconds, the 435i bellows and roars in the same fantastically belligerent way that every car fitted with this awesome engine does as it muscles its way to the legal limit and beyond, if you aren't keeping a close eye on it…

T

he 435i Gran Coupe handles in much the same way as the 435i coupe – meaning sensationally – and again just goes to prove how thoroughly excellent the basic 3 Series platform actually is. Turn-in is sharp and crisp, with a precisely-tracking rear end happily

AUTO PLUS

following through. Except if you want it to do something more anti-social, then it will do that quite happily as well. Like the sedan and coupe, the 435i GC has an incredibly well calibrated stability control system that allows the driver to pretty much dial in their preferred amount of intervention. Regardless of what the driver chooses, the system's intervention is seamless and almost invisible. The car is more than capable of making you feel like a hero, even if you most certainly aren't. The biggest thing that the Gran Coupe brings over the 3 Series sedan is sensational looks. While the 3 Series is a startlingly good looking car, the low, wide, aggressive appearance of the 4 Series coupe is carried over to the Gran Coupe, making for a car that is practical and startlingly sexy. INVEST IN SERVICING LUXURY VEHICLES Our vehicles were designed to get us from A to B, but the fact is, when you don't look after them they don't look after you. To keep your pride and joy performing at the best of its ability, you needn't look further than the Volkswagen, Audi and Skoda specialists at Dubworld.

OIL IS NO LONGER MADE OF MELTED DINOSAURS

“F

or a number of years now there have been a large amount of luxury cars available on the New Zealand market for a fraction of their value,” Dubworld's Steve Carpinter explains. “You can get a $65,000 Audi or Volkswagen that's five years old for half that price, but that $65,000 Audi or Volkswagen still has $65,000 worth of parts and development.” In the main, that development is in electronics and in engineering. To keep up with the electronics, Dubworld has invested significantly in the complex computerised diagnostic equipment required. “Lubrication is essential to precision engineered components and oil is no longer made of melted dinosaurs,” Steve says. “Modern oils are a synthetic chemical compound and

Volkswagen/Audi engines require very specific oils with correct additives, especially the chain driven engines. It's no longer okay to use any old oil.” To this end, Dubworld uses Liqui-Moly oils, precision oils imported from Germany, which have letters of approval from Volkswagen. Open from Monday to Friday 8am5pm, Dubworld welcomes all enquiries on site at 65 Disraeli Street Addington, or by phoning (03) 365 3733. Visit the new website at www.dubworld.co.nz to find out more.
